Product Details

Description

Description and Pack Sizes: Thick paste containing enteric-coated omeprazole 30 mg/mL.

Available in 30 mL plastic syringes.

Action: Omeprazole is a gastric acid pump inhibitor that regulates the final step in hydrogen ion production and blocks gastric acid secretion regardless of the cause. It irreversibly binds to the gastric parietal cell’s H+ / K+ ATPase enzyme.

Indication: For the treatment and prevention of gastric ulcers in horses.

Toxicity/Overdose/Antidote: Can be used in foals from 1 month of age and has a wide safety margin in horses and foals. Can be safely administered to stallions that are used for breeding. Safety has not been established in pregnant or lactating mares or when used for longer than 91 days.

DOSAGE: Administer orally at a dose rate of 5 mL/100 kg b.w. (1.5 mg/kg) ADULT HORSES (600 kg): Administer 30 mL once daily, or as directed by a veterinarian. Check horse’s mouth to ensure no feed is present. 1. Set the dose dial on the syringe to the required volume. 2. Insert nozzle into the side of the mouth in the gap between the front and back teeth. 3. Deposit paste between teeth and cheek or as far back over the tongue as possible. Ensure product is administered well inside the oral cavity. 4. Raise horse’s head immediately for several seconds and observe that the full dose is swallowed. Re-dosing is recommended if the horse does not ingest the full dose. 5. Replace cap and store syringe on its side.

Clinical signs of gastric ulceration include the following:

  • Depressed appetite or inappetence
  • Recurrent colic
  • Intermittent loose faeces
  • Chronic diarrhoea
  • Poor hair coat
  • Poor body condition

If omeprazole does not alleviate the symptoms of gastric ulceration the user should seek veterinary advice. Gastric ulceration may be present and performance horses may respond to treatment with omeprazole without exhibiting any of the classic clinical signs. Endoscopic examination of the gastric mucosa is recommended in these cases to accurately diagnose the condition so appropriate treatment can be instituted.

Special Precautions: Harmful to terrestrial vertebrates. Avoid release to the environment.

Withholding Times: MEAT: 63 days.

Human First Aid, Symptoms Of Poisoning: If swallowed, DO NOT induce vomiting. For advice, contact the National Poisons Centre (0800 POISON or 0800 764 766) or a doctor. If skin or hair contact occurs remove contaminated clothing and ush skin and hair with running water.

Storage conditions: Store in a dry place, below 25°C.
