Top 5 Spring Healthcare Tips For Your Cat

Spring is here! Here are our top 5 tips to keep your cat happy and healthy this Spring!

1. Cats get Fleas too!

Cats love to explore and can bring unwanted fleas from elsewhere into your home and pass them onto other pets. It’s important to make sure all the pets in your household are flea treated to prevent fleas in your home. Broadline is a monthly spot on treatment that’s tough on fleas, ticks and worms. 2. Worrisome Worms

Do you know where cats get worms from? As the weather gets warmer, our cats may begin to spend more time outside, exploring and hunting. Cats can pick up worms from ingesting mice, birds, slugs and snails. Cats can even get worms from ingesting fleas when they groom. Your cat is then able to shed these eggs, potentially around your home. Roundworms can be passed to humans and make you sick, with children most at risk. You can ensure your cat is wormed regularly with monthly Broadline treatments (See #1). Broadline is applied to the back of the neck, tackling tapeworm, whipworms and hookworms without the daunting task of having to give your cat a pill.

3. Does your Cat Still Seem to be Feeling the Cold?

During the colder months, our pets may slow down, and spend more time indoors and sleeping. As it starts to warm up and the days get longer, we should expect our pets to return to their more active lifestyles. Keep an eye on your cats for signs of arthritis, especially as they age. Cats are incredibly resilient and often hide the signs of pain really well. Little things like the reluctance to jump up or get down from their usual spots, hesitation to use stairs, or slower, stiffer movements could be causes of concern. If you believe your pet is exhibiting signs of arthritis, it’s a good idea to have them checked by your veterinarian. However, you don’t have to wait for signs of arthritis to start caring for your cat’s joint. There are supplements available to help maintain and preserve your cat’s joint function. 4CYTE for Cats is a premium once-daily feed material used to aid and maintain joint health. Its palatable formula makes adding it to your cat’s routine an easy way to look after your cat’s mobility.

4. Pretty but Poisonous

As the spring flowers start to bloom, be mindful not to bring any plants into your home that could be potentially poisonous to your pets. Lillies are known to be toxic to cats, and have the potential to cause kidney failure if ingested. Other common but potentially toxic plants include daffodils, aloe vera, bird of paradise, black nightshade, monstera and pothos. If you are concerned your pet has ingested a poisonous plant, call your veterinarian immediately for advice. The ASPCA have a great list of plants that could be toxic to your pet here.

5. Update your Details

If your cat’s adventures begin to lengthen as the days get longer, they may be at risk of straying too far and becoming lost. A microchip is the best way to get your pet back to you if they ever become lost. The NZCAR is a database that you can register your pets unique microchip number to, which is accessible by vets and SPCA’s. This means if your lost pet is taken to a clinic and scanned for a microchip, they would be able to contact you to reunite you with your pet. Now is better than ever to make sure your pet’s details are all up to date, so that if anything happened, your cat would be back home as quickly as possible.
