Whats The Best Ear Cleaner For My Dog

What’s the Best Ear Cleaner for My Dog?

Why Should I Clean My Dog’s Ears?

Dogs have an L shaped ear canal, which isn’t designed for good drainage. This can cause a build up of fluid and other microorganisms that may lead to infection. The 3 main types of ear infections in dogs are yeast, bacteria or both. However these are often caused by underlying issues such as allergies.

The best way to clean your dog’s ears is by using ear cleaning products, they can help remove wax, debris and odour. This will decrease the risk of itchy, uncomfortable ear infections.

All dogs are at risk of ear infections and they can come about in many different ways. Some breeds are more susceptible, such as Golden Retrievers, Basset Hounds, Labradoodles, Chinese Shar Pei and Beagles. This is due to the shape of the pinna or external ear. Dogs who spend more time in the water are also more susceptible and regular ear cleaning is recommended.

We always recommend using ear cleaners in conjunction with your veterinarian’s advice. If your dog is having ongoing issues with their ears then cleaning them will not be enough and we recommend a diagnostic work-up and plan is made with your current vet.

Our range of ear cleaning products:

Most ear cleaning products are used for prevention not treatment and are not suitable for dogs who are experiencing Otitis Externa. Veterinary examination is recommended before use to minimize damage, misuse and harm to your pet..

Epi Otic

Epi-Otic

If you are looking for an ear cleaner to use for routine cleaning, maintain hygiene and cleaning prior to medical solution. If you are concerned about possible ear infection this product is not suitable and expert advice will be required.

Epi-Otic has soothing, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It has a short tip to make it easy to use without inserting too deep and possibly causing damage. It is safe to use on dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. Epi-Otic contains lactic acid and salicylic acids which have effective drying properties but it can be harsh and can cause reactions with the skin.

PAW gentle ear cleaner

PAW Gentle Ear Cleaner

This is a natural ear cleaner meaning it is without any harsh chemicals and instead has citrus oils, oat protein hydrolysate and deionised water, meaning that it is PH balanced and gentle in ears. Most ear cleaners contain acidic or alcohol based ingredients which are crucial for ensuring the ear canal is dry to minimize the risk of ear inflammation or infection however there is a natural alternative as well.

PAW’s Gentle Ear Cleaner is good for clearing debris, reduces wax and reduces odour within the ear. This product has a long, flexible tip. Which allows the product to be inserted deeper into the ear canal as it moulds to the shape of the ear. This product is only suitable for dogs. Recommended for dogs who are not suffering from ear infections.

Otoflush

otoflush

This product can be used in the presence of infection but is used prior to with another antibiotic treatment to clean and remove/flush out any debris to improve the results of medicated products. This is not a suitable treatment for ear infections and is primarily used to “flush” the ear canal and will not be effective if used alone.

Otoflush is safe to use on ears which have ruptured ear drums. It is important to read the label and use it as directed. Daily use can overhydrate tissues and cause incorrect healing of the tympanic membrane. Suitable for dog use only.

How to clean your dog’s ears:

  1. Wash your hands. I would recommend cleaning your dog’s ears outside or in a bathroom.
  2. In a comfortable position, lift up their ear, giving you access to the ear opening.
  3. Check the ear for any weird smells, discharge and redness. If there seems to be a large quantity of wax, redness and foul smell , this may indicate that there is a more serious problem going on and a vet visit may be required. If your dog’s ear is looking good, continue to the next step if not they may need to be seen by a vet.
  4. Remove the lid (Some may need to be shaken first).
  5. Place the tip of the ear cleaner vertically.
  6. Follow the label and squeeze the ear cleaner into the ear. (Amount will depend on the product).
  7. Remove the ear cleaner and gently massage the base of the ear for approximately 1 minute to encourage the solution into the ear canal and loosen wax.
  8. With a swab to remove any debris or dirt that you can see from the ear (don’t go too deep).
  9. They may shake their head at this point which is normal.
  10. Repeat on the other ear.
