Why Flea, Tick & Worm Control Is Important
Fleas, ticks, and worms do more than cause itching. They can lead to serious health issues in dogs, including:
- Skin irritation, hair loss, and allergic dermatitis
- Intestinal worm infections and weight loss
- Anaemia and weakness
- Tick-borne illness
Using the right flea and worm treatments helps protect not only your dog, but also your home and family.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I treat my dog for fleas?
Flea treatment frequency depends on the product used. Some flea treatments are given monthly, while others provide protection for 3, 6, or up to 8 months. Always follow the product instructions and dosing guidelines.
Bravecto chewables are typically given every 3 months.
Bravecto spot-on is typically applied every 6 months.
Seresto collars should be replaced every 8 months.
Products such as NexGard, NexGard Spectra, Simparica, Simparica TRIO, Advantage, Advocate, Frontline Plus, and Revolution are typically given/applied monthly.
Do dogs in New Zealand need year-round flea control?
Yes. Fleas are present year-round in many parts of New Zealand, so ongoing flea control is commonly recommended for dogs, including indoor pets.
Do worming treatments prevent worms?
No. Worming treatments treat existing intestinal worms. Regular dosing is recommended because dogs can be re-exposed between treatments.
How often should I worm my dog?
Adult dogs are typically wormed every 3 months, although advice may vary depending on lifestyle and exposure risk. Puppies should be wormed at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 weeks of age, then monthly until 6 months old, before moving onto an adult worming schedule. Always speak to your vet for advice specific to your dog.
Do all-in-one flea, tick and worm treatments cover tapeworm in dogs in New Zealand?
No. There is currently no all-in-one flea, tick and worm treatment available in New Zealand that treats tapeworm in dogs. Tapeworm treatment requires the active ingredient praziquantel, which is not included in combination flea, tick and worm products available in New Zealand. To treat tapeworm specifically, veterinarians commonly recommend a praziquantel-based tablet such as Droncit or Wormicide, which targets tapeworm only.
