The Flea Life Cycle Made Simple

Understanding the flea life cycle is key to beating a flea infestation. Fleas spend most of their life living in the environment being pretty much indestructible until they choose to hatch and latch onto your pet. Here is a simple breakdown of a flea’s life, and how you can deal with them at each life stage.

1. Eggs

Adult fleas can lay up to 50 eggs a day. These eggs are laid on your pet but quickly fall into carpets, bedding, furniture, and other environments.

Tip: Flea eggs are hard to spot, but their “flea dirt” (poop) often appears as dark specks in your pet’s fur or around your home. To test if it’s flea dirt, place it on a damp paper towel—it will “bleed” red because it contains digested blood.

2. Larvae

Flea eggs hatch into larvae that hide in dark, damp places like the depths of carpets or under furniture. They feed on flea dirt and other organic material until they’re ready to pupate.

3. Pupae

Flea larvae spin themselves into cocoons and enter the pupal stage. These cocoons are nearly indestructible, protecting the pupae from flea bombs, cleaning, and weather. Pupae can remain dormant for months, waiting for ideal conditions to hatch.

Tip: Flea pupae respond to warmth, movement, and vibrations as signs of a nearby host. Vacuuming can stimulate hatching, making it easier to kill adult fleas.

4. Adult Fleas

Once they hatch, adult fleas immediately search for a host (your pet) to feed on and begin laying eggs, restarting the cycle.
